Sick Society is the Killer

December 18, 2012 § Leave a comment

In the wake of the Aurora theater shooting, the Oregon mall shooting, and now the Connecticut school shooting, an “emotional” (ask me why I quoted this) President Barack Obama has stated that, “We’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.”

The media is up in arms about gun control, and getting weapon off the streets. The knee jerk reaction we are going to see from our government, being spearheaded by the media, is a demand to control guns. To create more gun free zones. To get these dangerous weapons off the streets. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.), speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” said that on the first day of the new Congress next year, she would introduce legislation to ban assault weapons to, as she put it, get “weapons of war off our streets.”

What our legislators are failing to realize is the deeply rooted grander issue behind this picture. When you boil right down to it, the root of the issue is that we are a sick society. We live in an unrelenting rat race where we are inundated with mass media 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, blasted with products and consumerism everywhere we turn. Hollywood violence on the television and in our films. And to top it all off both of our parents are left without choice, but to work full time jobs just to make ends meet… The days of a stay at home mom/dad are long gone. The days of a ritualistic family dinners at the end of the day are a thing of the past. Our children are neglected and left to be raised by Xbox 360 and the latest iteration of Grand Theft Auto. Nobody has time for families anymore, we are relegated to feeding and raising our kids on Mc. Donalds, Burger King and processed “stuff” that is chemically enhanced to taste like food… We no longer have the time or patience to deal with a hyperactive child (probably due to chemicals fed and excessive video game marathons) that can’t sit still in class, instead opting to pump them full of pills; Adderall, Concerta and Ritalin. We are 4 percent of the world’s population but produce and use 88 percent of these amphetamine-like drugs primarily for the treatment of children’s “ADHD” or “ADD.”

A frustrated mothers plea for help has gone viral. Claiming to be (metaphorically speaking) Adam Lanza’s mother. This is going on all around our nation. In our schools these kids are being bullied, in our homes these kids are being neglected. In our streets these individuals are being brushed under the rug… Sick individuals are being ignored and left to fend for themselves, and all too often, the only way they know how to react is negative and fatal.

The answer is not more gun control. Protecting the 2nd amendment is crucial to a free society. For all the obvious reasons; sport, self defense, fighting a tyrannical state (however far-fetched that may seem to some). In fact, a strong argument and precedence against gun bans is Australia. Since their gun ban, armed robberies are up 69%, assaults with guns are up 29%, gun murders are up 19%, home invasions are up 21%.

On that note however, is it so hard to imagine a society where obtaining an assault weapon requires a more stringent background check, and/or even a mental or psychological evaluation? A simple requirement like this can go a long way towards mitigating some of the otherwise free-for all weapon obsession. Any sensible and logical adult realizes that when it comes right down to it, a psycho killer is going to kill no matter what legislation is in place. He will build a bomb, he will use a knife, he will use his hands. He will carry out his purpose irregardless of what weapon or not may be at his disposal. You can’t legislate crazy. But at least we can buffer some of that by attempting to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of mentally unstable individuals.

There are numerous incidents where a killer was stopped or deterred by a responsible carrying citizen. Banning weapons and creating further gun free zones will just yield more and bigger tragedies. A gun free zone screams high success rate to a killer. No one really knows what goes on inside the minds of these sick individuals, but the proof is in the pudding. When they strike, the intent seems to be of making a high fatality statement. How could John Holmes have been affected had the theater had an armed guard at its door? Or a responsible carrying citizen or two among that crowd?

How great has drug prohibition worked? Not only has it been highly unsuccessful at eliminating drugs, but it has successfully created a dangerous and lethal underground black market for the substance. Think of how horrible that underground market will be for illegal weapons?

Our immediate reaction should be to eliminate gun free zones, allow qualified individuals to conceal carry in our schools/churches/malls, etc. Allow private business and public institutions to hire armed guards. I can think of a struggling sector from our society who would love a job protecting our children and citizens. They’ve signed up for the task before… Unemployed veterans.

Lets allow ourselves to protect ourselves! And begin to address the real issue. Mental health, and its cause…
